Most brands focus on optimizing their own websites, but that’s only half the battle. If you want to show up on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other LLMs (Large Language Models), you need to show up everywhere they’re pulling information from.

If these sources don’t mention your brand (or mention outdated information), you risk getting misrepresented or missed altogether. But how do you exactly get mentioned in ChatGPT?

The mission of this blog post is to:

  • Make sure your site is set up the right way, so ChatGPT “sees” you.

  • Understand how brands end up in ChatGPT’s responses.

  • What types of content to publish that ChatGPT can reference.

  • How to build links around your brand using ChatGPT.

Get Your Technical SEO Foundation Right

Having the right technical SEO setup is the foundation for getting noticed by ChatGPT and other LLMs. If your site isn’t accessible, fast, and structured clearly, even the best content may be ignored. A few small fixes can make a big difference.

  • Allow ChatGPT’s crawlers. Update your robots.txt file to make sure OpenAI's bots are allowed to access your content. If they're blocked, your site won’t be cited.

  •  Submit your sitemap to Bing. Since ChatGPT uses Bing’s index, getting listed in Bing helps your content show up in ChatGPT responses.

  • Use clear structure on every page. Organize your content with headings (H1, H2, etc.), bullet points, and direct answers to common questions. This makes it easier for AI to quote or reference your content.

AI platforms change fast. The way they find and use your content today may not be the same tomorrow. Always keep an eye on how LLMs evolve, and adjust your strategy to stay visible.

We wrote a more detailed guide on how to set up your site so ChatGPT can “index” your site if you’d like to learn more.

Understand How Your Brand Is Showing Up on ChatGPT

Is your company around for more than a decade with lots of digital assets? Or are you a fairly new startup with only a handful of website pages?

Either way, you’ll have to understand how you’re showing up on ChatGPT (or if you’re showing up at all). You can do this process in two ways.

  • Manual tracking: You can go to ChatGPT and ask questions that your customers could potentially ask ChatGPT. Did your brand show up in the answers? Did ChatGPT mention your brand accurately?

Automatic tracking: Use GEO tools like Anvil to automatically monitor how your brand shows up on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and more.

Understanding what shows up about your brand on ChatGPT is the first step. You’ll know which sites ChatGPT is pulling the data from and what kind of information is associated with your brand.

Publish Blog Posts That Answer Rare Yet Real Questions

If you already have a blog, the next step is to figure out which types of content you need to publish. If you’ve been doing SEO for a long time, your strategy is most likely to write about keywords with high search volume and low keyword difficulty.

That’s the traditional strategy of winning at SEO. But if you want to show up on ChatGPT, you have to optimize for both SEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

Optimizing for generative AI chats like ChatGPT is fairly new, but one thing you can do is to answer rare yet real questions about the problems that your customers are facing. Why? It’s less competitive and provides a ton of value. It’s quality over quantity.

So, how can you find these real, rare questions? It’s easier than you might think:

  • Support chats: Review conversations your team has with customers—these are goldmines for real pain points phrased in the customer’s own words.

  • User interviews: Have one-on-one conversations with customers to understand their experiences, pain points, and expectations—these qualitative insights often reveal content gaps that your competitors haven’t addressed yet.

  • Social Media: Scan comments, replies, and DMs for repeat questions or hesitations—especially on platforms like LinkedIn, X, or TikTok.

Forums like Reddit:Search for your product category or niche on subreddits; the threads where users ask for help or advice often reflect under-addressed needs.

subreddit questions

The easiest way to find questions to answer is on Reddit. You can manually search for topics, use the Trends tab, or the Answers chat (currently in beta). The title of this blog post was inspired by a question we found on Reddit.

Publishing new topics that other sites don’t cover increases your chances of getting ranked on search and LLMs like ChatGPT.

One way to find new topics to write about is to use Anvil. It continuously scans queries related to your brand, so you’ll know which topics to prioritize.

Note that this tip is just the tip of the iceberg. Many variables can affect your content showing up on LLMs, such as your industry and the links pointing to your site.

Speaking of links…let’s talk about the next important tip.

How to Build Brand Mentions Beyond Your Own Site

This is another area where SEO and SEO converge and follow the same strategy. If you haven’t been building external links or have stopped doing them recently, it’s time to update your approach and processes.

run deep search

But what links matter to LLMs? Here’s how you can find out.

Do a deep research of your brand on ChatGPT. Deep research is a paid feature on ChatGPT that finds various sources (beyond the surface “web search”). You can use this prompt:

Find any online mentions of [Your Brand Name], [Former Brand Name], or [Alternate Brand Name].

Provide a full list of links where the brand is mentioned.

For each mention, summarize:

  • The context (e.g. blog post, product review, podcast feature)

  • What is said about the brand

  • The URL of the page

Once you have the list, it will give you an idea where your brands got mentioned. It will also give you a chance to see what ChatGPT says about you. If a site is referencing your old brand name or a product that you no longer offer, you can reach out to the original source and update it.

You can do the same with your competitors. Just replace your brand name with your competitor’s name. You can also ask ChatGPT to present the information in table form or CSV, so you can easily download it.

deep search

With this deep search, you’re able to see which sites your brand has been mentioned and what was mentioned. You’ll be surprised with the diversity in the links!

Once you see the list of links for yours and your competitors, you’ll get the general idea which sites ChatGPT typically crawl and reference. Try to do this manual deep research in each LLM. LLM will use different sources, and it will give you more ideas where to get links from.

Pro tip: Use Anvi’s citation feature to map out all the sites related to your brand and the queries in LLMs associated with it.

ChatGPT and Beyond

When it comes to generative AI, your brand’s presence online isn’t limited to your homepage or blog. ChatGPT pulls from everything: Reddit, social media, industry sites.

That’s why doing a brand mention audit is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make right now. You’ll see what ChatGPT sees. Then, you can update outdated info, swap in your new site, and replicate your competitors’ strongest placements.

You don’t have to do it manually either. Tools like Anvil help you track which queries your brand shows up in, what sources are being cited, and where you’re getting mentioned (or missed).

FAQs about ChatGPT Brand Mentions

How do I know which sites ChatGPT is using to talk about my brand?

You can use a prompt like:

“Find any online mentions of [Your Brand]. List links, what was said, and the context.”

Or use tools like Anvil to automatically track which sites and queries reference your brand across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

How do you get your company listed on ChatGPT?

There’s no formal “submission” process, but you can increase your chances of being included by:

  • Publishing structured, helpful content on your site

  • Getting mentioned and linked from trusted third-party sources

  • Ensuring your site is crawlable (e.g., allow OpenAI in robots.txt)

  • Submitting your sitemap to Bing (ChatGPT uses Bing’s index)

  • Writing content that directly answers questions your customers are likely to ask

What should I do if ChatGPT shows outdated info about my brand?

Find the original source (e.g. an old blog, directory, or media feature), and ask the content owner to update it.
Tools like Anvil make this easier by mapping citations and tracking where your brand is mentioned across AI platforms.

Which tools can I use to track mentions of my brand in ChatGPT?

There’s no native tool from OpenAI. But you can use ChatGPT’s own web search and deep search feature to map out links related to your brand. You can also use third-party tools like Anvil track where your brand is mentioned or cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other LLMs. They help you monitor citations, questions, and content visibility across AI platforms.
